Right now people are dealing with one of the most troubling issues ever with a mixture of the pandemic and figuring out how to work from home. With these two issues arise another, “How do I further my child’s education?” Parents are occupying multiple roles: working from home, teaching, and being full-time chefs.

If you are anything like me, the issue of ensuring your children continue to receive a valuable education is your number one priority. How will my child be prepared to excel in their next grade-level when they are not able to return to a brick and mortar school? What about standardized tests? How do I ensure progression during a crippling time like this pandemic?

One method I employ is the aspect of diversified learning: meaning that every activity they participate in is a “learning opportunity”. When they watch television, I make sure that they are watching something educational such as Super Why (a show about reading). There are several websites that also allow them to review grade-specific content. Another thing that I employ is an aspect of critical thinking. When they are engaged in play, I introduce them to the physics of their spinning toys (Beyblades). I explain things like the idea of shape and velocity and ask what they think in order to structure thought out responses.

Currently, it is of the utmost importance to make sure that children understand that this is not a break, but a time for them to become resourceful and knowledgeable of their surroundings. This critical thinking will help them to move forward so they don’t forget how to learn.
